History

The Family Centre’s purpose has always been to provide “strength to families”, but its services have changed over the years as the community’s needs have changed.

In the 1920’s, before social safety nets existed, our predecessors distributed food and clothing. As government and other agencies took over that role, our focus shifted to delivering professional counselling and in-home support to parents, key services to this day.

The agency incorporated in the 1940’s, striking its first citizen board of directors, and became a member of the Community Chest, now The United Way

Today, The Family Centre assists over 15,000 families annually. Its 400 staff include social workers, family counsellors and therapists, psychologists, workplace support specialists, family life educators, interpreters, youth workers, family aides, crisis intervention workers, family support workers, home support aides, mediators, nutritionists, and financial counselors.

We serve over 80 corporate and government clients as a member of Family Services Employee Assistance Programs, with over 50 offices across the country.
